Following up with our last episode on the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Mike and Bob talk with Bob Mehrens, the current National Director of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. It was truly great to get Mike, a former National Director of the AOH and Bob Mehrens together to talk about the AOH’s past, present, and future. They talk about the out of proportion role Montana AOH has played on the National Stage.

All parties of in the conversation have roots in Anaconda, and so we talk quite a bit about Marcus Daly. Daly, born in County Cavan, Ireland, came to find the Anaconda Mining Company. We talk about his journey to Montana, his connections to Thomas Francis Meagher, and how he helped shape the modern Montana Irish. Daly called on many people he was building up the communities of Anaconda and Butte, but he offered a special place for the Irish. Not only did the Irish come to fit into a system in Montana, but the Irish were building the system in Montana.

Bob Mehrens talks about the efforts in Anaconda to honor Daly and his legacy. They are looking to put up a bust of Daly. He also talks about the truly remarkable lives that Daly and the other Copper Kings lived – and how Anaconda and Butte changed the world.

We also talk about how Anaconda continues to build and foster the Irish of Montana. Building on its long history, the Anaconda AOH continues to foster the Irish community in Montana. Bob Mehrens goes on to talk about how the AOH does not have to be the center, but the important part is the community making sure they benefit. Not just fostering Irish culture, but fostering the values the AOH holds dear. If you would like to contribute to the creation of the display honoring Marcus Daly, you can send contributions to the Thomas Francis Meagher Association, PO Box 1916, Helena, Montana 59624. Mark your donation “Marcus Daly.”

Hope you enjoy the episode!
